How can we address the serious and immediate problems of recession – unemployment and low pay – and cut carbon emissions at the same time? Councillor Maya de Souza believes a local green 'new deal' is the answer.
The Green New Deal Group has put forward a compelling programme for national government. Their thinking is that we need to invest in transforming our economy now, while at the same time creating jobs in ‘green sectors’, such as insulation and renewables.
The group has calculated that one million new jobs can be created in this way. Economists at the Treasury, such as Nick Stern, also support the idea of a green 'new deal', and the government has recognised its potential. So this policy is now to some extent being promoted at central government level.
