The expansion of Britain's nuclear power capability was announced yesterday, the Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has swept away previous planning rules which held up previous building plans for up to six years.

In the future the Government hopes decisions will take a maximum of one year from proposal to go-ahead.

Mr Miliband unveiled the 10 sites that will be available to house the new generation of nuclear power stations. They are at Braystones, Sellafield and Kirksanton, all in Cumbria, Heysham in Lancashire, Hartlepool, Co Durham, Sizewell in Suffolk, Bradwell in Essex, Hinkley Point in Somerset, Oldbury in Gloucestershire and Wylfa in Anglesey

Supported by the National Grid, CHPA, Micropower Council and the Global Energy Club, Powering Towards 2020 will look at the future of power generation in the UK, and at the currently available energy sources, as well as the alternatives to help meet the demands of future UK power consumption. These include nuclear, coal, wind, wave, solar, PV, ground-source, biomass, energy from waste, CHP and community heating.

This is a great opportunity to get your views across regarding the future of power generation in the UK

Following the keynote address from Greg Barker MP, Shadow Minister for the Environment, “The challenges facing UK energy production”, delegates will be invited to join in the Q&A session and thereafter participate in the remainder of this comprehensive programme.
